INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT :

Fracking Action Intern

(Part-time, unpaid)

Do you want an internship where you are a part of a team of energetic people? Where you are growing professionally while making a difference?

This is the internship for you! We offer mentorships, trainings, professional development, snacks, and more! We are proud to have one of the best internship programs in the environmental field today.

The Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter is a leader in the environmental movement and brings the slogan "think global, act local" to life in the Silicon Valley.

We are seeking diligent, motivated, and creative individuals to support our staff and volunteers in the Fracking Action Committee to administer, aide, guide, organize, and implement their campaigns to outreach, educate, and empower the public, agencies, and elected officials to address the multi-faceted problems associated with fracking. Some of the campaigns you could be working on include: Pushing for either 1) stronger zoning regulations on oil drilling and fracking, 2) moratorium, or 3) ban on fracking in the Counties of Santa Clara and San Mateo.

An ideal candidate...

  • Has or is pursuing an Environmental Studies Bachelors or Masters Degree or has equivalent experience.
  • Available to come to our office in Palo Alto for 4-6 months and work at least 8-12 hours a week, Monday-Friday, during business hours (some work can be done out of the office)
  • Experience in research and field work
  • Available fourth Thursday of the month for regular committee meetings from 6pm-8pm
  • Available for sub-committee meetings based on time availability
  • Has passion and the drive to take action on local environmental issues and uphold Sierra Club sustainability goals

Key Responsibilities:

  • Background on issues involving fracking
    • Organize film screenings and public presentations
    • Speak with public agency staff and elected
    • Participate in fieldwork i.e. possibly looking for fracking sites
    • Help to recruit and engage new volunteers on conservation issue committees
    • Website updating
    • Represent the Chapter at local events
    • Grant-writing
    • Write articles, op-eds, and letters to the editor in local media sources

The Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter organizes outdoor recreation for people of all ages, advocates for policies that protect our natural environment, supports environmental candidates for public office, and provides opportunities for people who want to develop leadership skills to give back to the community and help the environment.
