Family and patient volunteers provide companionship to medically fragile children at George Mark Children's House through play, reading, art, music, and bedside visits. Volunteers also provide support to family members or siblings, and are an integral part of the George Mark team. Extensive training and a large commitment are required: at least one four hour shift per week for a year. Before attending a training, all volunteers must apply online, participate in a phone and in-person interview, and complete all necessary background paperwork including fingerprinting, health and immunization records and 2 letters of reference. Description

George Mark Children's House is the first freestanding children's respite and end of life care facility in the United States. The House, located in San Leandro, California, offers respite support (round-the-clock), transitional care, and end of life care for children with life limiting or life threatening illnesses. All care is informed by the principles of palliative care. Additional support services are available to all family members.
