The Center for Economic Progress (CEP) provides volunteers with the opportunity to work one-on-one with low-income families and help them stand on solid financial ground. In just one hour, you can provide a family with a tax refund of over $2000.

Register to volunteer at http://volunteer.economicprogress.org to view training dates, volunteer locations & schedules.

To volunteer at a tax preparation site:

- No experience necessary
- All trainings are provided; online training is available in November and classroom training takes place in January.
- Volunteers are asked to commit to just 30 hours total between January and April.

Volunteer positions available as...

- Tax preparers: Work with clients to file federal and state tax returns and provide counseling on tax credits and forms.
- Tax site assistants: Perform essential non-tax-preparation activities, including client intake, translating and educating on basic banking options available on site.

Mission Statement

The Center for Economic Progress (CEP) helps low-income, working families as a trusted provider of tax and financial services. Everything we do, from direct service to informing public policy, improves the financial stability of those we serve.

Description

Tax Help

CEP provides low-wage workers with free, high quality tax preparation and an alternative to paid tax preparers. We serve families who make less than $50,000 and individuals who make less than $25,000. Based on these income guidelines, we can help one in three Illinois residents.

Tax Clinic

Through our tax clinic, we provide free, professional representation to low-wage taxpayers facing an IRS controversy. We also o ffer tax training for small businesses to establish sound business practices, build their knowledge of record keeping and self-employment tax laws.

Financial Services

We help promote financial education and sound money practices -- helping cut ties to predatory financial services. We provide year-round workshops and one-on-one financial coaching to h elp clients set financial goals; c reate a spending plan; access safe and affordable bank products like bank accounts and small dollar loans; and review and correct credit reports and improve credit scores.
