OVERVIEW & BACKGROUND

Do you like volunteering with kids? OpenWorld Learning (OWL) is a local non-profit focused on developing digital literacy skills, leadership, and a love of learning in students from low-income areas of Denver. OWL is seeking volunteers for the 2014-15 school year. As an intern you will teach computer skills to under-served students during the day at Ellis Elementary. OWL students use computers to develop personally meaningful research, multimedia, and computer programming projects as well as to complete school assignments.

HOURS

  • Between 4-12 hours per week
  • Site schedule as follows:
    • Monday through Thursday from approximately 3:00-5:45pm

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in youth development
  • Understanding of or interest in the Denver Latino community
  • Interest in technology and willingness to learn the curriculum
  • Punctuality, flexibility, positivity, and patience
  • Reliable transportation

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Assist Site Leader in running the OWL program and teaching curriculum
  • Serve as a role model and mentor to OWL students by modeling a positive attitude, a healthy self-image, and creating an atmosphere of trust
  • Learn and teach the OWL curriculum, including LEGO robotics, stop motion animation, graphic design, and web design
  • Inspire students to develop personally meaningful projects
  • Help create a fun environment by bringing new ideas to the site
  • Demonstrate teamwork and people skills, including interacting with teachers and parents as needed

OpenWorld Learning (OWL) is a rapidly growing after-school technology program for 3rd-8th graders in Denver-area public schools.

We are looking for committed volunteers to assist in our office, at our sites, and at multiple annual events. If you are interested in donating your time and abilities please let us know!
