The Casa Romantica

Volunteers are the vital success of the Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens. Volunteers create an environment of hospitality and friendship that will touch countless visitors to the site. They encouraging them to maximize their time at the Casa and to visit again and again. The Casa Romantica offers a variety of categories to volunteer within the organization including:

  • Casa Greeters are the front desk ambassadors for our organization. They are the first people that guests see when they enter the Casa Doors. Tasks include opening the center, welcoming guests, collect admission, process gift store payments, and share general information about the Casa.
  • Casa Docents have an in depth knowledge of the house, the gardens, and Ole Hanson’s role as founder of San Clemente. Many senior, garden, historical and student groups throughout the county and beyond make reservations to tour the Casa and its gardens. As tours are scheduled, these knowledgeable docents will have the opportunity to sign up to conduct them.
  • Garden Volunteers are not always seen by our guests, yet it is their efforts which make our gardens such an attraction. Mondays are the primary gardening days. Gardening begins around 9:00AM. However, volunteers may arrive at any time and work as long as conditions or their schedules allow.
  • School Programs Volunteers help us prepare and deliver presentations to elementary students who visit us annually in January and May. We will have specific tours and interactive activities that correlate to their classroom curriculum.
  • Administrative Volunteer: This may be an ongoing commitment with a regular schedule or it may be an "as needed" assignment such as preparing a bulk mailing, decorating for an event, setting up or taking down an exhibit, maintaining the Casa news clipping file or any other administrative function.
  • Storytellers read for toddlers on Wednesday mornings. This program may be expanded in the summer months to include older groups.

Mission Statement

Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization and is the historic home of the founder of the City of San Clemente. Casa Romantica provides programs for all ages in arts, music, history, horticulture and literature and is a premier Southern California cultural center.

Description

San Clemente is one of the first master-planned cities in California. Co-founder Ole Hanson came to the site to create his ideal community, a "Spanish Village by the Sea."

In 1927, Hanson built the Casa Romantica as his family home, and expression of his version of the California dream. The seven-bedroom, seven-bath house was designed by Carl Lindbom, who also designed La Casa Pacifica (the former Western White House).

Over the years, the house passed through various owners until Lambert and Patricia Schuyler (pronounced Skyler) bought the property in 1946 and named it Casa Romantica. The ex- Mrs. Fred Waring (of orchestra fame) purchased the home in 1952. Four years later, Mrs. Waring sold the home to Muriel and Leslie Whitehouse, who named it Casa Blanca after their name. In 1960 the property began a new life, and was operated as a senior citizens’ home until 1984 by George and Louise Welsh, who renamed it Casa Romantica.

From 1984 until 2000, the Casa was leased to a private business for special events. The San Clemente Redevelopment Agency purchased the property from the Welsh Family Partnership in 1989.

Casa Romantica was listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1991.
