HELP THE AMERICAN RED CROSS SAVE LIVES! Be an Apheresis (platelet collections) Special Assistant!
Overview:
The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.
Every two seconds someone in America gets a blood transfusion. Five million patients will need blood this year. As a Blood Drive Team Member you are an important part of the Red Cross mission to provide life saving blood to our community.
Your job is to provide excellent customer service to donors and visitors ensuring experiences are positive and rewarding and that donors return. Equally important is the support you provide to the collection team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Represent Red Cross positively and professionally. Stay helpful, flexible and patient.
- Approach donors and visitors and initiate welcoming conversations.
- Welcome, greet, check in and thank each donor. Inform donors of special programs.
- Provide excellent customer service to ensure every donor need is met.
- Ensure donors read instructions about giving platelets. Answer questions about the donation process. Refer medical questions to employees.
- Offer refreshments to donors. Keep refreshment area well stocked and clean.
- File and/or pull medical charts. Make appointment reminder and/or thank you phone calls.
- Clean and sanitize equipment: counters, televisions, beds, tables, floors, etc.
- Fold blankets; put away videos and hot water bottles.
- Stock non-regulated supplies on carts (see department coordinator instructions.)
- Encourage donors to return by providing educational facts.
Community Outcomes:
American Red Cross Biomedical Services plays a critical role in our nation’s health care system. It is the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the United States, collecting and processing more than 40 percent of the blood supply and distributing it to some 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide.
Training:
American Red Cross offers three hours of orientation and training as well as ongoing updates, and support.
Time:
We ask that you to sign up for One 4-hour shift per week for 6 months, or two 4-hour shifts per month for 1 year or more.
Locations and Times:
Apheresis collection takes place at the Red Cross Building at 3131 N. Vancouver Avenue, Portland, 97227. Volunteers can choose shifts according to their own convenience. Shifts are organized in 4 hour blocks from 6am to 6pm, seven days a week.
Skills and Knowledge:
- A warm, friendly and gracious manner with a desire to help others.
- Good communication skills to give verbal instructions clearly, politely and accurately to donors.
- Customer service experience preferred with a commitment to putting donor first at all times.
- Demonstrated dependability and punctuality.
- Constant observation to assess and prioritize work.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing needs and priorities.
- Successfully pass a file review.
- Lift up to 20 lbs: pulling, reaching, bending, and crouching.
- Follow the department attendance policy.
- Follow the policies outlined in the American Red Cross Volunteer Handbook.
