The BackPack program helps alleviate child hunger by discreetly providing them with backpacks full of nutritious and easy-to-prepare food on Friday afternoons so they have food to eat throughout the weekend. The program started in 2014 and has thus expanded to 15 elementary and middle schools throughout the City of Albany and has served over 600 children each week.
My organization believes that without the extra burden of hunger, attendance would increase as well as academic performance. We want to make sure that today's K-8 students do not have to come see us later. Our overall mission with this program is to alleviate hunger and homelessness in the Capital Region.
We need volunteers to pack the backpacks and deliver them to the schools. The first round will start Oct 6th and will occur every week until the end of the academic school year. I will keep in constant contact with you about the details. Interviews with potential drivers will be conducted and a clean driving record is a must.
