ESL Instructors
Work description
ESL Instructors work with adults in small groups to provide them with opportunities and support in practicing conversational English. The goals are to help participants to improve their verbal skills and gain confidence in communicating in a variety of situations. For example: interviewing for a job, communicating with their child’s teacher, ordering food in an American restaurant, making phone calls, and so on. We will make the resources and materials you need available and provided training as needed in ESL methods specific to adult learners.
Context
Helping Link is a community-based non-profit agency located in Seattle's International District. Our mission is to empower Vietnamese-Americans’ social adjustment, family stability, and self-sufficiency while nurturing community service and youth leaders. We offer language and computer literacy classes, citizenship training, tutoring, youth leadership programs, community information, and referral services. We serve approximately 1,100 low-income families a year--largely immigrants and refugees. We rely on a dedicated corps of volunteers for the various programs we offer.
Impact
Service-learning volunteers provide Helping Link with the benefits of fresh perspectives, evolving practices in education, and enthusiasm. In turn, service-learners work with our diverse and dedicated core of long-term volunteers to provide programs and services that merge current research in teaching techniques with the wisdom of cultural tradition. The spirit of our vision, "Helping Transitions, Honoring Traditions," is played out in a balance of our cultural legacy and new learning opportunities.
