Role Title: Canteen Host

Role Overview:

The American Red Cross is in need of Canteen Hosts that provide attention, care, and refreshments to donors following blood donation. Canteen Hosts are needed in our blood donor room, our apheresis (platelets) donor room and for various blood drives in the community.

Tasks:

• Keep the canteen area well supplied
• Keep the canteen area clean and tidy
• Converse with donors after their donation
• Offer refreshments, cookies, and post donation instructions
• Explain the importance of blood donations and encourage regular donations
• Be alert and response to any adverse donor reactions
• Thank the donor.

Time Commitment:

It’s Flexible! We work with your schedule. Shifts are typically scheduled in 2-6 hour blocks.

Skills:

• Greeting/communication skills

Requirements:

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Background Checks required for all volunteers over 18.

Training:

• Orientation and trainings are provided.

Survivors of disaster, patients needing lifesaving blood, members of the military and many more turn to the Red Cross every second of every day. Since volunteers constitute about 95 percent of the American Red Cross workforce, it is through your continuous participation and support that we are able to mobilize the world's largest humanitarian network.

About the Great Lakes Blood Services Region: We offer the community a chance to donate blood in our donor room located at the Genesee-Lapeer Chapter of the Red Cross in Flint as well as through area mobile blood drives. We also deliver blood to various locations, including hospitals that need it either on a regularly scheduled run or in emergency situations.
