Become a friend! Compeer matches community volunteers in one-to-one friendships with adults who are living with mental illness.

Community volunteers spend four hours per month (for at least a year) enjoying the company of their new friend while they engage in activities that both enjoy. Training, ongoing support, and supervision are provided to our volunteers. Compeer offers several fun group activities (picnics, movies, workshops, etc.) for all Compeer participants each year.

Mission Statement

The Compeer Program matches adults who are living with mental illness with community volunteers to create intentional friendships with the goal of reducing isolation and loneliness.

Description

"Compeer" means a companion who is also a peer or equal. Loneliness, failure, fear and loss of self-esteem are universal experiences of those who suffer from mental illnesses. A caring friend can help to restore some joy and hope to a life that is often empty of both. Compeer provides a fun and flexible volunteer opportunity that fits into your current lifestyle. You can choose to spend time with someone your own age, or older or younger than yourself. As a volunteer, you will meet with your friend on a regular basis at mutually convenient times to share activities you enjoy. Our matched friends go to movies, sporting events, shopping or out for coffee and a chat. Through the gift of your friendship, you will become a significant part of another's life and see the results of that effort almost immediately.
