Rappahannock United Way (RUW) is seeking volunteers for the 2017-18 Tax Season. Prior experience is not required; volunteers are trained by Rappahannock United Way and certified by the IRS. There are even jobs for those not particularly interested in preparing taxes! We need volunteer greeters as well. Your participation, either as a tax preparer or a greeter, plays a significant role in the success of RUW’s tax program.
RUW prepares federal and state tax returns for individuals and families making less than $64,000 a year, for FREE. Last year, RUW volunteers completed 2,080 tax returns putting over $1.8 million back into our community and saving an estimated $464,000 in tax preparation fees. This service is managed by RUW staff, but operated entirely by volunteers. Volunteers are a vital part of the Tax Program and entire community. Sign up today to join a growing number of volunteers who make a significant financial impact in our community.
Below is a brief explanation of the volunteer positions available.
GREETERS:
Greeters with RUW’s Tax Program are the first people that the tax clients meet when they arrive at our tax sites. A Greeter is responsible for welcoming clients, ensuring clients have proper documentation, maintaining the waiting area including the waiting list, and assisting the Site Coordinator with setting up the tax site. Greeters must be comfortable working with people and quickly scanning documents for income verification.
TAX PREPARERS:
Tax Preparers with RUW’s tax program are the people who work directly with the clients to file both state and federal tax returns. A Tax Preparer is responsible for performing client interviews, completing accurate tax returns and distributing client surveys. Preparers may be asked to assist Tax Site Coordinator with set-up and/or take-down of the site, and to review other Preparers’ work prior to filing. Tax Preparers must be comfortable working with people, reviewing tax documents for information, and using computerized tax software to complete tax returns.
