The PHONE is a 24 hour crisis telephone line that serves the Baton Rouge and surrounding areas, and Crisis Chat is an online instant messaging program that offers an alternative way for people in crisis to reach out for help. Volunteer counselors for both programs will receive extensive training in crisis and suicide intervention. Fill out an application at www.brcic.org Our next training class for Crisis Intervention volunteers begins in September 2015. The main qualification we are looking for in PHONE and Crisis Chat counselors is the ability to be empathetic and nonjudgmental, and a willingness to learn. Volunteer counselors are trained in active listening, crisis theory and intervention, suicide and violence assessment and community resources.

Our mission is to offer prevention, intervention, and postvention services that both provide support in times of crisis and reduce the impact of suicide in the community.
Description
This mission is accomplished through innovative programming not available in more traditional helping settings. The center offers a 24 Hour Crisis line, the United Way Info Line, Survivors of Suicide Program, the Local Outreach to Survivors of Suicide program, Children's Bereavement program, Community training in suicide risk assessment, crisis intervention, stress management and related topics.
