ORGANIZATION: X-Street Uganda Basketball Academy

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

X-Street runs two basic programs which include; Sports and Life skills for children. Both programs complement each other and that is what makes us unique.

Under our sports program, basketball is the first sport followed by others that are yet to be introduced at the academy.

The life skills program covers a wide scope and engages and prepares children on how to have responsible livelihood. We cover various topics in this program which include; critical thinking, career choice and development, reproductive health, conflict resolution, self expression, networking and many others.

And Our Sports program too carries on many sports too though taking on Basketball as our Champion sport. We have introduced; football, tag rugby, netball and many others we wish to put on board!

The life skills educators and Volunteer sports coaches will be working with us on the two programs run at the academy; sports and life skills development!

We have partner schools we work with where we take our life skills classes and have reach to most of the community children. The volunteers will be leading life skills classes and other sports campaigns at the academy. About the holidays, when schools close, we still have access to these children since they are from the same community and we have been reaching out to. We can still have our life skills classes go on. We have arranged a holiday package to keep these young people learning. Though those that will be here before the holidays are on, can work in teams to lead classes in our partner schools The work schedule is already in place. One will be required to work at least four days in a week. That is 3 weekly days and 1 weekend day Saturday. Though since we are working on starting other projects, one can still lend a hand in extra work if they have some free time About having a supportive team, yes for sure there are other coaches and our field manager who will help guide them on the activities, there is totally no problem. A volunteer needs not to forget to come with their own computer since there is not enough facilitation yet at the academy. It will help them on planning for the activities since they too will help on drawing and articulating our life skills program. In regards to accommodation, yes we can for sure find a hostel in which they can stay for them near our offices. We would need to know the number coming in first and how long they will be staying with us. Well also service with us for 3 to 4 weeks is still okay since it is still great input to the organization. Hope this information helps. Please feel free to contact me in case of any inquiries.

Skills needed; Should be atleast a highschool Graduate. Should have some knowledge on project management. Have interest in any sport-Basketball is an added advantage. Love children and community development.

Living Conditions;

Accomodation; The academy doesnt pay or give any accomodation for interns/volunteers for now. Accomodation shall be paid by the volunteer/intern. There is good housing in Jinja town not so far away from the NGO location. Depending on choice; There are guest houses, Dorms and houses for rent. A guest house would cost one about 200US$ per month. These are self contained where you share a house with other interns/volunteers-each with their own room.

Life conditions; Since the project is in a sub urban setting off Jinja town, one can access any services from the town such as; banks, internet, supermarkets, tourist shops, cafes, Adventures at the source of the nile, rafting and many other sorts of fun. Though you will notice the difference; how glamourous the town is and how bad the sub urbans are with poverty stricken homes.

Food; There are plenty of dishes from different cafes and local restaurants. You can have most international dishes in the cafes and good tasty african food in the local resturants.

Application;

Mission Statement

X-street Uganda is a nonprofit organization dedicated to better quality of life of vulnerable Children in Uganda through life skills and sports Development.

Description

The academy is non profit and works with children. We reach out to vulnerable children exploring their potential by inspiring them through sports and life skills. After realising that children love sports, we realised it is the best way they can learn and their full potential explored. The founder being a person with great passion of basketball, started this non profit first starting with the sport he was more fond of and familiar with- Basketball. Then i was joined later on by other people with similar interests. Now the academy runs as a non profit running in Walukuba-Masese Division one of the suburban areas in Uganda with the most vulnerable children, and amazingly...it is working, Children are learning and getting talented too. We have partnered with several schools in the area and we take our life skills program there too. We have also introduced other several sports volleyball inclusive though basketball still remains our champion sport
