Help residents in nursing and assisted living facilities in Northern Virginia (Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun) advocate for their rights, resolve conflicts and improve their quality of life! The Northern Virginia Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program seeks ombudsman volunteers to commit four hours a week for at least one year. Volunteers set their own schedules and receive on-going training and support. Visits usually occur between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays. Apply now for the Fall 2017 training. Volunteers ombudsmen must:
* be at least 21 years of age;
* provide personal references;
* have the ability to get from place to place;
* not be employed by or volunteer in a long-term care facility or home health agency;
* not have a financial interest in a long-term care facility or home health agency;
* be able to say NO when agency policy requires it;
* be non-judgmental.
Approximately 24 hours of training will be required.

Ombudsmen:
Advocate for improving the quality of life for persons receiving long-term care services.
Resolve complaints against long-term care providers through counseling, negotiation, and investigation.
Provide information about long-term care providers to help consumers make an informed choice.
Educate the community about long-term care issues.
Visit long term care facilities on a weekly basis through our volunteer program.
Train long-term care staff.
Consult with providers.
