ORGANIZATION: Science Club for Girls

  • 5 people are interested

Who we are: Science Club for Girls works to capture the interest of girls at a young age by exposing them to the magic of science in a collaborative learning environment. For 9 weeks each fall and spring, girls spend an hour each week in an afterschool based setting engaged in hands-on science based activities.

Who we seek: Science Club for Girls is seeking committed, energetic volunteers to lead these young girls. Past volunteers have included: undergraduate students, graduate students, medical school students, doctors, professors, lab scientists and engineers.

How we work: Led by 1-2 women scientists and 2 Junior Mentors (middle and high school students), groups of six to ten girls make observations, test hypothesis and keep journals as biologists, chemists, and physicists, and design and build various structures as engineers. The year culminates in a science fair where our young scientists show off their new skills to friends and family.

Your commitment: A volunteer commits two hours a week to the club she is assigned to lead. She must be fully prepared for each week’s exploration. ALL volunteers MUST complete the mandatory Science Club for Girls Training and Orientation before leading a club.

Mission Statement

SCFG fosters excitement, confidence and literacy in STEM for girls, particularly from underrepresented communities, by providing free, experiential programs and by maximizing meaningful interactions with women mentors in science, technology, engineering & mathematics.

Description

Since its founding in 1994, Science Club for Girls (SCFG) has provided the very best in girls-specific programming by connecting girls in K-12 grades, especially those from underrepresented groups, with female mentor-scientists through free science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs in a fun, nurturing, interactive environment. Our club-based model fosters both scientific thinking and sisterhood for our youngest participants. Our teen leadership programs give girls the opportunity to be role models, teach young children science, learn life skills, conduct science research in applied settings, and explore careers in science and technology.

As of the 2014-15 program year, approximately 1,000 girls participate in SCFG programs in 17+ sites across four communities in eastern Massachusetts (Boston, Cambridge, Lawrence, and Newton). Sites are hosted by schools, community centers, the campuses of colleges and universities, and inside the corporate offices of our partner companies in STEM fields.
