Su Casa
Originally a Franciscan Monastery, Su Casa now provides shelter, food, counseling and community to homeless latino families. We also work to serve the needs of our neighbors providing free community breakfasts 3 days a week, and lunch once a week.

We warmly invite groups of all sizes and ages to volunteer at Su Casa! Volunteers can work on the premises while immersed in our diverse community and rich tradition of hospitality. Whether your group seeks to volunteer for a week or just a few hours, there is always a need for extra hands around the house. Common activities include helping out at our soup kitchen, preparing and sharing meals with the families, cleaning and organizing rooms, painting, and an array of other house projects. We hope to provide groups with a dynamic experience that offers hands-on service while heightening awareness of the issues that plague our neighborhood and the inner city poor.

If you would like to schedule a group of volunteers, please call or email sucasaplunge@gmail.com .

About Su Casa Catholic Worker/ Central American Martyrs Center

Location:

5045 S. Laflin St., Chicago, IL 60609, US

Mission Statement

Su Casa is a house of hospitality in the Catholic Worker tradition that provides a space of healing and hope to displaced Hispanic families and provides support to people in our community. Responding to the Gospel call to compassionate action, we are committed to a simple, non-violent lifestyle as we live and work among the poor.

Description

Su Casa is a transitional housing program for homeless Latino families located in Chicago's Back of the Yards community. Families can stay at Su Casa until they have the resources they need to move on to more permanent housing. Su Casa offers case management services, food, clothing, and transportation assistance, homework help and many recreational and educational activities.

We also manage Frieda's Place, where we offer a community center open to anyone in the neigborhood, with free breakfasts 2 times a week and a Sunday lunch. Guests also have access to free clothing and toiletries, and on Sundays receive groceries to take home for the week. Food is donated by Trader Joes and, during growing season, fresh, organic produce is distributed through Su Casa's garden that is managed by Growing Home.

There are 2 full time, low-salaried workers, a part time case manager, and 8 to 10 part and full-time live in volunteers who support the organization.

We are committed to working for social justice in our community and in the world, while living simply with one another.
