The Children's Home & Aid Foster Care Excellence Academy is looking for Male Mentors between the ages of 21 and 45 to join their programming and provide positive role models for the young men in the program. The Excellence Academy serves youth in Specialized Foster care, and helps these youth with life skills and academic support in order to do well in the foster care system and the rest of their lives. Many of the young men in the program are growing up without male role models at home, and the staff would love to have volunteers who would be willing to be a positive influence in the lives of these youth who desperately need it. These mentors would not need to lead programming - staff would love to have them participate by helping with homework and life skills sessions during the academic year, and potentially joining the youth on field trips in the summer.

During the academic year, Excellence Academy hours are 3:30-6pm, M-F.

During the summer, program hours are 12-5pm, M-F.

Ideally, a volunteer would have one week day free where they could participate in programming regardless of the schedule hours changing, however we would be willing to work with volunteers who can only commit to the summer or the winter sessions if necessary.

All volunteers are required to do a Background Check and Health Screen/TB test. Due to the extensive volunteer intake process required in order to work with Foster Youth, and the need for our youth to have stable and reliable individuals in their lives to counteract the effects of repeated abandonment and neglect they have experienced, volunteers are asked to make a 3-6 month minimum commitment to the programming.

Working with youth who have few role models provides the opportunity to have a huge impact. If you consider yourself a stable and caring adult male with a lot to give, we would LOVE to hear from you!

About the Excellence Academy: One of the biggest struggles facing at-risk foster children is maintaining interest and performance in school. Through mentoring, tutoring and positive support, The Children's Home Aid Excellence Academy helps students build confidence, self-esteem, life skills and academic skills.

The Excellence Academy targets youth 10 -18 years old who are in need of placement stability. These youth are placed in special foster care homes with foster parents who are trained to work with the children to develop discipline along with academic and social skills. The program includes weekly, professional in-home visits, service planning (which incorporates the services the Academy provides), respite, and extended support for the foster families.

Available services include: educational tutoring and study hall; independent living skills including life skills classes, employment readiness, computer literacy, and youth leadership. There are also mental health services including individual, group, and family therapy, recreational activities, and mentoring.
