Be an important partner in improving the economy of YOUR community! Become an IRS-certified tax preparer and help working-poor families keep more of their money.
Earn it. Keep it. Save it. is a free tax preparation service provided by United Way 211, Utah Community Action Partnerships, and sponsored by Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). During the 2016 tax year, Utah volunteers helped 20,659 taxpayers prepare their returns for free, saving them nearly $4.4 million in preparation fees and generating $25 million in refunds!
To volunteer:
Volunteers are asked to commit to just 3 hours per week from the first of February to April 15.
Go to www.utahtaxhelp.org. Click on volunteer, and create a profile.
For questions or more information, contact Elisa Balderas at ebalderas@owcap.org or 801-399-9281 x309.
Volunteers are needed to assist in 3 ways during the spring tax season each year:
Greeters: Greeters welcome taxpayers as they come to the site, providing them with an intake form to fill out, which assists the tax preparer in knowing the taxpayer's specific tax situation. Greeters also verify that taxpayers have the required documents to have their taxes prepared, such as identification, Social Security cards, W-2 forms, etc.
Tax Preparers: All training is provided by the IRS, free of charge! Training is in-class and/or online and begins in December. Testing is open book. Basic and Advanced certification is available. Returns are prepared on a computer, and a computer lab is available for preparing practice returns during training.
Financial Educators: Taxpayers are encouraged to consult with financial educators who can assist them in many different ways, such as how to create a budget, how to save money, and the best way to maximize their tax refunds for financial security.
