Shot Clinic Animal Handler

We also call these volunteers "runners", because they are responsible for running cats and dogs through the vaccination process at our monthly clinic events.

We hold a low-cost vaccination clinic on the first Sunday of each month. They are very well-attended--rain or shine! Pet owners wait outside while "runners" escort pets and paperwork inside the clinic to see the vet. Runners hand off paperwork to another volunteer for processing, and hand off the the animal to our vet techs for medical treatment. After a few minutes, they return the completed paperwork and vaccinated animal to the owner. We can vaccinate about 50 animals per hour, so be prepared to move, interact with all breeds of dogs and cats, and get a little dirty.

Where: 8210 D’Arcy Road, Forestville, MD
When: 1st Sunday of each month, from 12pm-4pm

(Some clinic dates are moved to the 1st Saturday of the month--we are very close to FedEx Field and cannot operate if there is a home game!)

Mission Statement

We have three main objectives:

  • To reduce pet overpopulation through our progressive spay/neuter program;
  • To prevent animal cruelty, neglect, and suffering through our investigations, legal action, affordable vaccinations, and an active dog and cat adoption program;
  • To promote animal-friendly public policy through humane education.

Description

The SPCA/Humane Society of Prince George’s County, Inc. (PGSPCA) is a nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to animal welfare. We are chartered by the State of Maryland, but we receive no state or county funds. Our activities are supported solely by contributions, dues and fundraising events.

We are an all-volunteer organization, from our elected Board of Directors to our fosters, administrative staff, and event teams. The PGSPCA is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation and a United Way member agency (#8977). We do not have a central office or operate a shelter, nor are we part of the county government or affiliated with the Prince George’s County Animal Shelter, which is run by the government and county employees.

Since the plight of strays and owner give-ups is so dire in Prince George’s County, more so than in many surrounding jurisdictions, our organization’s efforts and resources are tightly focused on animal welfare in our local region. With that in mind, most of the animals in our foster program have been rescued from the County’s shelter facility.

The PGSPCA provides a 24-hour voice-mail answering service and receives about 1,000 calls each month. 40% of these calls are spay and neuter assistance requests, 10% are for cruelty investigations, 25% for miscellaneous information, and 25% are adoption requests. We employ a live answering service for emergency cases of animals suffering, which are referred to an on-call volunteer for immediate attention.

We offer monthly low-cost shot clinics and quarterly spay/neuter events. We also offer a voucher program whereby county citizens can receive low-cost spay/neuter services from participating veterinarians.
