Newhouse is looking for volunteers to work in our in-shelter school, which serves school aged children (K-8) residing in our domestic violence shelter. This is a unique opportunity for students currently working towards a degree in Elementary, Secondary, or Special Education. On any given day our school serve's students with a variety of abilities and challenges. Internship, field experience, and student teaching opportunities are available.
Newhouse is a branch of the Kansas City Public School System. The school is located on-site at the shelter. Our wonderful teacher is Special Education Certified and follows the district curriculum. She also works closely with the school district to provide a rigorous education that meets their standards.

The mission of NEWHOUSE is to break the cycle of domestic violence by providing the tools that allow women to make positive choices and lead self-sufficient lives.
Description
Newhouse provides access, admittance and residence in temporary shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children 24-hours a day, every day of the year. Newhouse takes a comprehensive approach in meeting the needs of the women and children who turn to Newhouse for emergency shelter and for relief from the crushing distress of domestic violence.
Newhouse has served Kansas City's urban core for 42 years. In 2012, Newhouse provided 24,769 bednights to 792 residents (511 women and 281 children). Newhouse answered 9,248 emergency hotline calls and served 661 victims in the Municipal Domestic Violence Court system.
