Arnette House provides programs and services to Lake and Marion Counties by caring and dedicated professionals who focus on the strengths of the family while providing skills and knowledge to help improve life at home. This includes residential servcies in our 24 hour Emergency Youth Shelter for children ages 10-17 who are runaways, lockouts, homeless, truant or experiencing parent/child conflict. When kids need a place to go, The Arnette House is here to provide basic living needs in our emergency shelter. We serve more than 500 children each year. We also provide non-residential counseling for children ages 8-17 and their familes and Foster Care Group Home living. We operate two Foster Care group homes for six boys and six girls which focus on the physical and emotional well-being of individual clients, and teach methods for sustaining basic life skills aimed at fostering self-sufficiency.

Volunteer Opportunities:

The Administrative Volunteer will work with various administrative staff doing a variety of office related duties. They should be friendly, flexible, and enjoy interaction with the public. The Administrative Volunteer may be assigned to assist in making phone calls, typing or word processing, making copies, filing, preparing mailings, proofreading, data entry, delivering messages and running errands. Special duties can be assigned/arranged based on the volunteer’s background, experience, and education. These may include duties in the areas of finance, human resources, outreach, marketing, fund raising, or therapeutic/social work.

The Kitchen volunteer will work under the direction of the Food Service Coordinator doing various kitchen duties. The Kitchen volunteer will assist the Food Services Coordinator with preparation of meals, serving meals, assist in planning special events, inventory and occasionally teach meal preparation skills to clients. Duties may include peeling, cutting and portioning ingredients; preparing meals by baking or stove top cooking; doing dishes and cleaning the kitchen and/or appliances. While working with clients, help develop confidence and a positive attitude toward learning life skills by affirming positive behaviors. Show respect for the client by listening to what he/she has to say and by respecting their life experiences. Give praise whenever the client is successful. Encouraging the client to respond to difficult situations by being supportive rather than critical of his/her mistakes. Report regularly and punctually to volunteer assignment.

The Tutor/Mentor volunteer will help children 10-17 with basic reading and writing skills, school work, and life skills. Spend time taking part in recreational with the clients. This position can take place either at the emergency shelter or at the group homes. Specific duties include helping clients develop confidence and a positive attitude toward learning and school work by affirming positive behaviors and skills. Showing respect for the student by listening to what he/she has to say and by respecting their life experiences. Selecting activities and approaches that are suitable to the student’s skill level and needs. Giving praise whenever the student is successful. Encouraging the student to respond to difficult materials by being supportive rather than critical of his/her mistakes. Meeting regularly and punctually.

The Arnette House provides a variety of residential and non-residential services to individuals and families. These include counseling, crisis intervention, referrals, information, and residential services in the 5th Circuit which includes; Marion, Lake, Sumter, Hernando & Citrus Counties.

Services are by caring and dedicated professionals who focus on the strengths of the family while providing skills and knowledge to help improve life at home. Our master’s-level counselors provide our clients with the therapy they need with to end conflict, improve communication and reunite children with their families.

Our Goals

1. To keep families together by helping them earlier, before kids are out of control.

2. To strengthen the family unit before kids end up in delinquency or foster care.

3. To be a place for the "front end" of the Juvenile Justice System (the key is prevention and early intervention).

Residential Services include a 24 hour emergency youth shelter for children ages 10-17 who are runaways, lockouts, homeless, truant or experiencing parent/child conflict. When kids need a place to go, The Arnette House is here to provide respite care in our emergency shelter. We serve more than 500 children each year.

Non-Residential Family Crisis Intervention Counseling provides immediate crisis intervention and counseling which helps families resolve crisis situations and stay together.

Group Homes/Transitional Living consists of two Foster Care group homes for six boys and six girls ages 13-17 which focus on the physical and emotional well-being of individual clients, and teach methods for sustaining basic life skills aimed at fostering self-sufficiency. Clients are provided a healthy and supportive living environment, which meets basic needs such as food and shelter, and will assist in their goal to become self-sufficient once they age out of foster care when they turn 18.
