About Urban Threads Studio

Location:

1200 West 35th Street, Fashion Design Center, Bridgeport Art Center, Oak Park, IL 60302, US

Mission Statement

Urban Threads Studio (UTS), located in Chicago, is a not-for-profit organization that is committed to educational excellence in providing innovative textile and apparel design and production workshops to a diverse community. UTS inspires individuals at all age levels of culturally varied backgrounds to engage in a journey of self-expression through textile art workshops in our studio or on-site. This art form uses textile fibers to create and construct practical articles of clothing, accessories, or home decoration and at the same time this medium lends itself towards complete artistic expression.

Description

The organization was founded in response to the need for providing a third space (apart from home and school) where we could bring together a diversity of talents in a fun and nurturing environment, in which textile art instruction serves as a vehicle of learning by doing. All projects involve discipline, imagination, problem solving, self expression, organization and team work.

If it is textile based and you can make it by hand, we want to teach it in our studio. Our philosophy is to run contemporary, hands-on, project-based workshops, so that you can come along, learn something new and go home with a finished product or a new skill. Why? Because there is tremendous power in making something yourself. You will learn new skills or revisit old ones; you will discover the joy of working with your hands and you will find an outlet of your creativity. Along the way you will renew your spiriti and perhaps make a few new friends. All of our classes are taught by visiting artists and/or experts in the field.

We are governed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors. The Board oversees planning and directs fundraising efforts. The staff at UTS works closely with the Board to implement strategies that allow us to achieve our organizational goals.
