Refugee Transportation Assistance

ORGANIZATION: Lutheran Social Service, Refugee Services

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Transportation is one of the biggest challenges that newly arriving refugees face. Some who come here are united with relatives, but they are often struggling themselves to get started in the United States and may not be available to provide needed assistance. Other refugees have no local ties, so we must do everything to provide for their needs during the first several months after arrival.

Every newly arrived refugee must have a medical screening; apply for Social Security, Medicaid, food stamps and a Michigan ID; and register for employment services. Those with school-age children must enroll the children in school. Volunteers can help provide transportation and additional assistance for refugees to these important appointments and help them with the application process. Volunteers may also help men aged 18-26 to register for the U.S. draft. Volunteers may now be reimbursed for mileage! If you or your group would like to help out with transportation, we will work with your interest level and schedule!
