Court Appointed Special Advocates are volunteers who advocate for the best interest of a child in foster care. CASA volunteers are trained to be a voice for children who are in the foster care system due to abuse or neglect. These children are caught in the tangle of the legal system and need someone to speak up for them. Volunteers visit their assigned child twice per month, review records, interview invovled parties and attend court hearings as well as write reports to submit to the Judge.

Passaic County CASA supervises and provides support for volunteers as we work towards the common goal of improving the lives of foster children. Currently, over 500 children are waiting for a volunteer to speak up for them and to ensure that they don't fall between the cracks of the system.

About CASA of Passaic and Union Counties

Mission Statement

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Passaic and Union Counties is an independent, non-profit organization that champions the best interests of children involved in the child welfare system. CASA volunteers serve as a child's advocate in court and are committed to ensuring that needed services and assistance are made available to children in need.

Description

Every year more than half a million abused and neglected children are in need of safe, permanent, nurturing homes.

That's where CASA steps in. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) was created in 1977 to make sure the abuse and neglect these children originally suffered at home doesn't continue as abuse and neglect at the hands of the system. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. The result is that a child has an individual advocate to speak for them in court.

It is the CASA vision to provide a volunteer for each and every abused and neglected child who needs one.
