VIRTUAL VOLUNTEERING AS A TEAM! We invite you to recruit nine of your work colleagues in order to tutor ten at-risk first grade readers each week - 100% online! Tutor right from your office, with just a computer and a phone! Tutor just once a week during the school year, at a time (during the school day) which you select and can easily adjust each week. Each team member commits to calling their own assigned student once per week for 30 minute guided tutoring sessions! Please see this great video overview to get a clear sense of our program: http://tiny.cc/tutormate

RESPOND ONLY IF YOU CAN FORM A TEAM OF TEN WORK COLLEAGUES (or to ask if your employer is already participating). Note: There is a nominal program support fee as well to help keep this program sustainable.

========================================================

Innovations for Learning Inc. is a nationally focused education nonprofit, dedicated to insuring that inner-city first and second graders can learn to read at grade-level. One core IFL program to serve this goal is called TutorMate. TutorMate relies on volunteer full time working professionals who provide just 30 minutes per week as online reading tutors, supporting at-risk young students.

The volunteers tutor directly from their workplace, or in fact from any location with internet access. No travel needed each week to distant schools. No need to tutor at the same time each week. This flexible approach enables many busy professionals to still find the time to give back to their community in a way that makes a real difference in the lives of early grade public school kids. Our kids are at an age where a little support - offered consistently each week - has a big impact.

TutorMate currently operates in 23 major urban school systems across the US, in partnerships with districts, principals and early grade teachers. Over 4500 employees from over 160 major corporations, law firms, associations, and government agencies are serving as volunteer tutors. The list of districts and participating employers is growing rapidly.

We invite you to lead an effort to recruit one or more teams of tutors from your colleagues and adopt some of our many first grade classrooms, where the teachers and students would be thrilled to receive your weekly tutoring support.

We generally prefer our volunteer tutors to be in the same metro area as their students. One reason: Face to face meetups are encouraged once or twice during the school year. Because of existing school partnerships, we are especially seeking tutoring teams in this (growing) list of areas: Atlanta, Baltimore, Broward County FL, Charlotte, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Duval County FL, Houston, Jackson MS, Los Angeles, NYC, Oakland, Santa Ana, Seattle, Wash DC.

Mission Statement

Innovations for Learning is a nonprofit organization committed to improving literacy outcomes of young students in under-resourced schools by connecting the classroom to the community.

Description

We are committed to improving literacy outcomes of primary grade students in under-resourced schools. Our flagship program, TutorMate, offers a unique opportunity for local volunteers to help students practice reading through weekly, online reading sessions. The consistent connection with a nurturing and friendly tutor not only helps students reach grade-level literacy, but also fosters self-esteem, confidence, and a joy for reading.

TutorMate is changing the literacy landscape in 27 major metropolitan school districts in the United States and, as of 2018, in London, UK and Toronto, Canada.
