Horton’s Kids, Inc., winner of the Washington Post Award for Excellence in Non Profit Management, is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that benefits children living in Washington, DC’s Anacostia neighborhood. The cornerstone of our services is our thrice-weekly one-on-one tutoring program in the Rayburn House Office Building and in the Department of Education. To support the children’s education, Horton’s Kids provides college and career planning for older youth, monthly field trips, eyeglasses, access to dental care, nutritious meals, warm winter coats, educational advocacy, and more. In addition, the organization provides holiday gifts and celebrations, family assistance, and other activities aimed at improving the quality of life for the children.

We are seeking highly-motivated volunteers for our Older Youth Program which is held at our Community Resource Center in Anacostia and serves youth ages 12-21.

An Older Youth Volunteer role would be a great fit for someone interested in poverty, social work, youth development, education, and who has a passion for working with youth. We are asking our older youth volunteers to commit to working at the CRC at least one evening per week (Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays) for 2-3 hours (5 pm-8 pm)

Contact us for more inforamtion about where you would fit best in the program!

Mission Statement

Horton’s Kids empowers children growing up in one of DC’s most violent, under-resourced communities so that they graduate from high school ready for success in college, career, and life. We serve 500 children in grades K-12 living in Wellington Park, a neighborhood where 80 percent of adults don’t have a high school diploma and the average annual household income is less than $10,000. With support from committed volunteers, Horton’s Kids’ goal is to change the life trajectory of children by providing academic, youth development, and health and basic needs supports. Our impact is dramatic: in fact, children in Horton’s Kids are twice as likely to graduate from high school.

Description

Horton’s Kids empowers children living in one of Washington, DC’s most under-resourced communities so that they graduate from high school ready for success in college, career, and life. We are a community-based organization that serves 500 children, grades K through 12. , living in an isolated neighborhood called Wellington Park in Washington, DC’s Ward 8. The children we serve live in a community with one of the highest rates of violent crime in DC, where the average family income is less than $10,000 per year. Horton's Kids operates a safe and welcoming Community Resource Center just steps from where the children live. In our 28-year history, we’ve shown enormous outcomes: the high school graduation rate for Horton’s Kids participants is nearly twice the neighborhood average.

Activities center on traditional tutoring and mentoring activities, ensuring fundamental needs are met such as adequate health care, food and clothing, serving as advocates for the children in the school system and other settings, and offering activities and challenging opportunities to enhance the childrens' education, expand their minds and expose them to the possibilities of a wider world.
