Beating Hunger By a Mile is a media/awareness event that kicks off Hunger Action Month.which takes place Thursday, Sept 3rd. We start at the City and County Building downtown and line food items up the street for a mile, ending on the steps of the Capitol Building.
We need volunteers to help line the food up as we go up the street. We’ll also leave volunteers along the trail to watch the food and make sure it doesn’t wander off. They’ll also answer questions people have like "what is going on here?" "what is this for?" "Can I have this peanut butter?" They’ll be given fliers with talking points about the event and hunger in Utah as well as fliers with information about the nearest food pantries in case there is someone that is in need. Education, that’s what it’s all about.
There will be three shifts for volunteers to choose from: 8am to 10am, 10am to 12pm, or 12pm to 2pm. Volunteers for the 8am shift will report to Washington Square to receive their assignments, the 10am and 12pm shifts will be reporting at other locations along the route (more info available upon request).
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
This event is a great way to give back to the community by educating them on the reality of hunger in Utah.

Description
During more than 100 years of service, the accomplishment of which Utah Food Bank is most proud and dedicated is a strong record of service to citizens living in poverty or hardship. Utah Food Bank has been able to organize the communities of Utah to help through food drives, volunteerism, and corporate and governmental participation.
Utah Food Bank serves a diverse population through different programs. The following are the programs that we are able to provide in the community. We provide hot meals to low-income children through the Kids Cafe program and shelf stable, kid friendly food to low-income children for weekend use through the BackPack Program. The Food Box program provides a supplemental box of food to low-income seniors (60+ years) each month.
The food for each of these programs is provided by community food drives and commercial donations. Emergency food provided to partner agencies comes through multiple channels, including the two mentioned above, and purchased food.
