Do you like to play? We've got a great opportunity for you to help children with special needs and have a lot of fun all at the same time!
Our support group, SPECIAL Families of Puget Sound (Tacoma group) meets at the Children's Museum of Tacoma on the second Thursday of each month from 6-8pm. We provide childcare to families that have children with special needs, such as autism. Experience working with children that have special needs is a plus, but not required. You must also possess patience, flexible thinking, and be willing to learn and utilize the brief training materials we provide.
The time commitment is 2.5 hours per month, and volunteers are asked to show up promptly at 5:45 on our monthly meeting night. Because the children need routine and seek out familiar faces, we ask that all volunteers commit to a minimum of 3-6 months.
Our goal is to provide a positive, inclusive play experience for children so that their parents can: enjoy attending the meeting that takes place in a designated room on-site, learn from the speaker, be with other adults, and not have worry or concern over their child(ren) during the 2-hour monthly meeting.
All childcare volunteers must complete a simple application and pass a background check. Volunteer applications can be found on our website at http://www.exceptionalfamilies.org/volunteer.html.
