Foster Children who do not do well in school often do not read at grade level -- Children who are not reading at grade level often become a school dropout -- 30% of Oakland and Richmond Youth do not graduate from high school. That number is higher for youth in Foster Care.

How can you help?
Become the consistent, attentive, caring adult in a child's life. Youth need someone to listen, support them, challenge them to do more and think bigger.

Mentors provide accountability, connection to resources, and become a trusted friend.

Be A Mentor provides, training, support, and mentoring activities.

Mentors go out into the community with their mentee to explore, talk, HAVE FUN. and build relationships. We ask for a ONE YEAR FIRM COMMITTMENT, 2 hours per week minimum. Must be at least 21 years old. Must live in Alameda County.

Our mentors say they gain so much from the experience that is life changing for our youth.

We provide proven and sustainable mentoring programs for agencies by recruiting, training and matching adult volunteers who wish to mentor youth. Description

The Be A Mentor Program pairs caring adult volunteers from the community with youth in one-to-one relationships. Mentors give of their time to be a friend, answering questions, and providing guidance. Mentors come from a variety of backgrounds and occupations and volunteer their personal time to be a caring friend to a youth. They serve as a role model, advocate, and resource. The purpose of the mentoring relationship is to help youth develop their full potential, both in and outside of the classroom.

  • Minimum 2 hours a week for 1 year! That is 52 weeks to make a huge impact in the life of a youth that would otherwise may fall through the cracks.
