The Oakland Public Library is seeking volunteers to distribute free children’s books outside eight library locations on Saturday, August 17. Help us pass out books and promote literacy!
The event will run 11:00-3:00 p.m. on August 17. Volunteers will be asked to arrive 60 minutes ahead of time and to stay and pack up afterward. Shorter shifts are also available if you aren't able to stay the whole time.
Locations looking for volunteers include:
- 81st Avenue Branch Library, 1021 81st Avenue
- West Oakland Branch Library, 1801 Adeline Street
- Melrose Branch Library, 4805 Foothill Boulevard
(Books to be distributed are brand new; donated by Disney to the Oakland Unified School District.)

Description
The Oakland Public Library is a part of the City of Oakland and has been in existence since 1878. Our locations currently include 16 branches, a Main Library, 6 Teen Zones, the Second Start Adult Literacy Program, a Tool Lending Library and the African American Museum and Library. We also operate the Books for Wider Horizons program that recruits, trains, and places volunteer story readers in preschool or childcare centers throughout the City of Oakland and offer many other special services for residents of Oakland and California.
We are supported by a lively Friends of the Library group and by the Library Advisory Commission, as well as by local Friends' groups around the city.
