Help ESL students in our evening Adult Education classes practice their English! We need volunteers to have basic conversations with our students to help them become more comfortable with the language and let them try out new words and phrases they learn in class.
Qualifications:
- Fluency in Spanish, Arabic, or French.
- Prior experience tutoring or teaching.
- A degree in Education, Social Work, or a desired foreign language can substitute for experience.
- Patience, compassion, and understanding while working with students with varying education levels and experience.
- Respect for and desire to work within a diverse population.
- Creativity and the ability to explain subject material from multiple angles.
- Professional, reliable, punctual and creative personality.
- Ability to respectfully and supportively give corrections to students.

Description
Founded more than a century ago, the Settlement has built a strong tradition of responsiveness to community need - developing child health stations early in the century, advocating for equal opportunity in sanitation, public housing and education from its inception. During the Great Depression, the Settlement provided food and employment and hope to many destitute families, preparing them for a better future. The Settlement has grown to become one of the largest human service agencies in East Harlem, serving more than 12,000 individuals on a daily basis out of 16 community locations with essential services including child care, mental health, education, care for the elderly, HIV/Aids services, adult education and much more.
