Conversation Partners Program

Conversation Partners Program is sponsored by the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU-C). Here in CESL, we understand that international students often have a difficult time speaking with Americans outside of the class. We also understand that an important portion of the English language learning and improvement process involves applying one’s linguistic skills in a genuine and authentic communicative environment. In Conversation Partners Program, we match our CESL students with native speakers of English for conversation practice, language support, and cultural exchange. The program aims to help CESL students practice and improve their English skills, and more importantly help them network on campus and locally, and learn and adapt to American culture. The program also offers current SIU-C students and the local community an opportunity to learn about different languages and cultures and to develop friendships internationally. Therefore, the program facilitates cultural awareness and understanding and provides participants the opportunity to see the world from different perspectives and develop a rewarding meaningful friendship. Partners meet weekly for about an hour to practice conversational English.

Description

The Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) is a place where students from all over the world come to learn and improve their English. In order to successfully learn any language, one needs to practice with native speakers of the language. It is our goal to find a conversation partner for each CESL student who would like to further develop their English listening, speaking, and conversational skills.

For native English speakers, the Conversation Partner Program is a great way to learn about another culture and begin networking internationally while gaining resume building experience. Conversation partners can earn volunteer hours recognized by the University.
