Child abuse ruins lives, innocence, families, and communities. At any given time, there are more than 400 children in foster care in Luzerne County because of abuse and neglect.
These children are depending on their community to stand up for them and their best interests. As a Court Appointed Special Advocate, you can give and abused and neglected child a chance for a positive future.
Through the work of CASA volunteers, these vulnerable children find safe, permanent homes as quickly as possible. Our volunteers dedicate themselves to one child (or sibling group). They learn all they can about a child's history and experiences, and then use that information to make informed recommendations to the Luzerne County Dependency Judges. After spending time with a child, the volunteer is able to tell the court what permanent placement would be best for that child, and what immediate services the child needs to move from a place of chaos to a place of stability.
Volunteers must be at least twenty-one years of age and must successfully complete screening requirements, a thorough background check, and a training course.

Description
We are Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children, a volunteer-powered network of committed people- from all walks of life- who believe society has a fundamental obligation to these children. We are people just like you who believe that every child has the right to be treated with dignity, to be safe, and to thrive in the embrace of a loving family.
Children who suffer abuse or neglect are 53 percent more likely to become juvenile delinquents, 38 percent more likely to be arrested as adults, and 38 percent more likely to become violent criminals, according to a study conducted for the National Institute of Justice. What’s more, abused and neglected children are involved in delinquency and criminal activity earlier, commit more offenses, and more often become chronic or repeat offenders. Abused children also have lower IQs and reading ability, higher rates of unemployment, more low-paying jobs and higher rates of suicide attempts.
