Coalition for the Upper South Platte (CUSP)

Post fire flooding poses a major threat of damage to homes, lives and infrastructure in the Waldo Canyon Fire burn scar. Many sites along US Highway 24 and Fountain Creek have been identified as highly vulnerable to flood impacts.

Project work will include one or more of the following:

  • Removing debris and potentially dangerous structures from properties; relocating items to higher ground or off site
  • Re-vegetation of hill slopes
  • Installing erosion control wattles, straw bale structures or log erosion barriers
  • Building sandbag barriers
  • Raking of aerial seeding around sediment retention ponds
  • Constructing rock gabion baskets

Mission Statement

To protect the water quality and ecological health of the Upper South Platte Watershed through the cooperative efforts of watershed stakeholders, with emphasis on community values and economic sustainability.

Description

CUSP works in the 2,600 square miles watershed southwest of Denver, which supplies 75% of the drinking water for Colorado residents. We work in a variety of areas, including forest health and fire rehabilitation following the 2002 Hayman Fire; river restoration; wildlife habitat improvement; trail restoration; and environmental education.

Preservation and Restoration

Current group and individual volunteer opprotunties include: planting pine, harvesting and transplanting willows in critical drainages of the Trail Creek area damaged by the Hayman Fire; river and trail restoration near pristine fisheries; Waldo Canyon Fire recovery and restoration.

Service Learning

Projects provide students with exceptional opportunities to complete environmental service and gain a better understanding of issues related to: forest and water health, fire rehabilitaion and wildlife habitats.

College level internships provide opportunities for students to complete environmental service, research, and fieldwork.
