VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program volunteers provide basic assistance for low-to-moderate income taxpayers. The average taxpayer pays $50 - $250 or more for a paid preparer to fill out and file a basic tax return. Some taxpayers also take out high-cost, quick refund loans.
United Way of Saginaw County operates IRS certified VITA sites in Saginaw County. These sites offer free tax return preparation and electronic filling to those that qualify. When taxpayers keep all the money they have earned, they are able to spend it in their communities.
Those interested must have prior tax knowledge and return preparation experience. Commitment is attend 3 -4 day training in January and then one day (6 hours) per week for 11 weeks during tax season.
