Do you have a passion to help adult learners advance to the next level? Then volunteering for Metro North Adult Basic Education (ABE) is for you. This volunteer opportunity is available Fridays, 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
As an ESL volunteer you will assist high level English language learners, who are preparing for College entrance exams. In a classroom setting, under the direction of trained staff, the focus will be on reading, writing, grammar skills and conversation practice. This will include one-one tutoring experiences, as well. Volunteers will occasionally guide learners on computers and may assist with other classroom tasks.
Metro North ABE is seeking enthusiastic, friendly,and conscientious volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers are supported through an orientation, training, and on-going support form the classroom teacher and site staff.

Description
Metro North Adult Basic Education is a well established program, known as a collaborative partner sharing resources and working to find new and innovative ways to meet the needs of our learners. We have been serving a diverse population of adult learners in the north metro communities of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St Paul) for more than 30 years. Metro North ABE is one of the largest consortiums in the state and is recognized as a leader in the best practices in adult basic education.
We are comprised of 8 school districts, providing free classes to adults for learning English, basics in reading, writing and math skills, citizenship, preparation for college placement, GED preparation, diploma, basic computer skills, transitions to post-secondary, and work place readiness. Last year we provided services to over 2000 learners. About half are learning English in our ESL program, and the other half are in basic skills development, GED, and other classes.
Metro North's diversity is not only in its adult learners, its sites are unique in offering urban, suburban, rural and small town settings. Covering the northern part of the Twin Cities, the consortium includes these school districts: Anoka-Hennepin, Brooklyn Center, Centennial, Columbia Heights, Elk River, Fridley, Spring Lake Park and St. Francis.
