The Poverty Simulation is a tool used to inform participants of the day to day experiences for the economically poor. At least 40 participants are needed to hold a simulation with a maximum of 80 able to take part. When participants arrive, they are assigned a role to play. In timed 15-minute "weeks," their goal is to meet their bills and make sure their family is feed. The entire simulation with introductions, simulation, and debrief will take 2 hours.

Volunteers are essential to the success of a simulation. There are 15 different volunteer positions: Banker/Loan Collector, Quick Cash Worker, Community Action Staff, Supercenter Clerk, Mortgage/Rent Collector, Pawnbroker, Police Office, Utility Collector, Social Service Office Receptionist, Social Service Case Worker, Schoolteacher, Employer, Childcare Worker, Inter-faith Services Worker, and Community Healthcare Doctor/Nurse Practitioner. All roles are thoroughly documented and explained. Volunteers will be required to arrive a half hour before the scheduled simulation to review their assigned role and become familiar with their materials. You will then interact throughout the simulation with the participants.

Though not a game, the simulation uses many pieces such as play money, car titles, id cards, paychecks, etc. Simulations are often scheduled sporadically and are often held in the evening or on weekends.

Upcoming Poverty Simulations where volunteers are needed:
- Tuesday, April 9, 2024
