Our hospice patients love to have books read to them, songs, music or just overall companionship.
Some of the most caring and compassionate volunteers are those who have walked through a serious illness with a loved one. As a companion volunteer for our hospice patients, you will serve the emotional, spiritual and physical needs of our patients and their families.
Typical companion activities might include watching TV, playing games, reading, praying or sharing music. You might also provide a few hours of much needed respite care for a family member.
Our training program is designed to give our volunteers an insight into hospice philosophy, as well as give you tools to begin providing companionship to our patients. We provide all necessary training and screenings at no cost to the volunteers. Reliable transportation is desired. We offer flexible scheduling at nearby facilities and homes.
Due to covid-19 restrictions, volunteer visits are not being completed yet but facilities will be opening up soon and we want to make sure to have volunteers available. Onboarding is taking place now.

Description
AseraCare is a family-centered hospice. We provide hospice services to patients and their families in the place they call home - in their apartment or house, assisted living or nursing home. Our services include RN case management, home health aid visits, social work, spiritual care, volunteers, and bereavement support for the families.
Hospice volunteers are needed in St. Joseph's County, Elkhart County, Marshall County, LaGrange, Fulton County and Kosciusko County to provide companionship and emotional support to patients and families according to the patient's plan of care. Hospice patients are individuals with terminal illnesses with a life expectancy of 6 months or less. Volunteer support me be in form of conversation, handholding, simple presence at the bedside, recreational activities, and pet/music therapy. Volunteers have the opportunity to develop on-going relationships with patients and families throughout their illness, or may be involved in short term "vigil" relationships.
