NAMI Gulf Coast’s Second Chance Thrift Shop is a hidden gem in Alvin, TX. Unlike your typical thrift shop, every cent from items purchased goes back into the community to help individuals and families impacted by mental illness in the Galveston and Brazoria counties.
Thrift shop volunteers help process community donated items by sorting, tagging, pricing and putting them on the sales floor. Volunteers also help create displays, maintain the cleanliness of the store, and greet customers. This is a great way to gain general employment or retail experience as well as a great opportunity for individuals and groups looking to make a difference in their community!
This opportunity also qualifies for individual and group community service and service learning hours. Retail experience is helpful but not necessary. We’ll provide the training! Bilingual (Spanish speaking) individuals are strongly encouraged to apply for this volunteer opportunity!

It is the mission of NAMI Gulf Coast to provide support, education, and service advocacy for families and individuals affected by mental illness. Eliminating the stigma of mental illness is our primary goal, and our hope is that one day mental illness will be treated with the same compassion and understanding as any other illness.
Description
In 1988, Carolyn Karbowski founded NAMI Gulf Coast. This was a result of a two-year journey after her son was diagnosed with schizophrenia and she discovered there were few services, no educational programs and no support for families struggling with mental illness. Determined to make a much-needed change, Carolyn began to organize services that would benefit those affected by mental illness. NAMI Gulf Coast has evolved from a volunteer-run, grass roots organization to a vibrant education and support agency that is known throughout the state of Texas as one of its leading NAMI affiliates.
Today, we continue to offer our local communities with mental health education programs. The programs we currently offer are Ending the Silence, Partnerships (PTR), Family & Friends (F&F), and AS+K? About Suicide. You can learn more about each of these programs on our website. We also provide support for families and individuals affected by mental illness through our monthly support groups, newsletter, HelpLine, and community events. Lastly, we provide advocacy at the local, state, and national level to work for legislation and funding to ensure quality care for people living with mental illness.
