NJ State Museum Gallery Teacher
Reports to: Melissa Kelly, Volunteer Coordinator
Discovery Den opens in December and provides Natural History resources to explore life cycles, identify fossils and learn about New Jersey wildlife. Volunteers are needed in both galleries to assist visitors, answer questions, guide activities and teach with objects. Volunteers will also be required to continually monitor activity in the exhibition space to ensure that visitors follow the Museum rules, monitor gallery elements and keep spaces free of clutter between groups.
Volunteers will receive training to teach with the gallery objects, interpret the exhibition, monitor and communicate with a variety of ages.
This is a perfect opportunity for someone looking for a regular volunteer schedule and/or teaching students that would like to gain experience.
Essential Duties:
Provide professional and responsive assistance to visitors, to include responding to basic visitor questions and requests for directions about the museum and its facilities.
Teach with museum objects and provide hands-on gallery experiences.
To tactfully ensure that visitors follow the Museum rules (i.e. no touching of artifacts, no climbing into or on artifacts, no running in the gallery, etc.);
Monitor and inventory gallery elements and Museum property
Assist in light cleaning and maintenance of the gallery to ensure the highest-quality visitor space.
