PRS Recovery Academy is seeking an energetic, dynamic, and patient volunteer to co-lead one-hour psychoeducational groups to individuals living with mental illness in a classroom setting.
Hours: At least one day a week for 1-2 hours or more, between the hours of 10am-2pm, Monday-Friday.
Location: Fairfax or Mount Vernon, VA
PRS Recovery Academies provide a curriculum-based day program to individuals living with mental illness, substance use disorders, mild intellectual disabilities, or autism spectrum disorders, to promote movement out of PRS' facility-based programming and into meaningful community alternatives such as work, volunteering and school. Services assisting with transition to community-based activities and dual diagnoses are also offered.
DUTIES
Assist in teaching a class of 10-20 adults with mental illness and co-occurring disorders in a classroom setting. The volunteer will be flexible, creative, assertive, able to manage behaviors while teaching, and understand how to present and effectively communicate material to individuals with a variety of cognitive functioning levels.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work or related field or significant work experience. Some clinical experience in a mental health field preferred (but not required); knowledge of basic de-escalation techniques a plus.
