Join our Stitch-A-Wish Click for babies! We knit and crochet purple hats for infants 0-4 months for Cook Children's Period of Purple Crying program.
The Period of Purple Crying is an evidence-based parent education program developed by the National Center of Shaken Baby to teach about normal infant crying, crying as a trigger to Shaken Baby Syndrome, and the dangers of shaking a baby.
As part of the program, our Stitch-A-Wish volunteers make purple hats to give to parents who have completed the program. Since half our patient population is infant/toddler, that's a LOT of hats! We need your help to make the purple hats and be a part of keeping infants safe.
There is no minimum requirement of hats to make or time line; the need is ongoing. We sometimes have donations of purple yarn that we are able to give away. Otherwise, the Stitchers supply their own yarn.
For the more outgoing, we offer several Stitch-a-Thons during the year if you would like to come to the medical center and knit, sew, or crochet among your fellow Stitchers for a day.
We ask that all hats be made with soft yarns, washed before delivery, made in a smoke-free environment, and not around pets. Many of our infants have respiratory problems and fragile immune systems so these can potentially have an adverse effect.
