Responsibilities for this position include:
- Reviewing and communicating each new refugees’ material and practical needs
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with internal and external sponsors
- Coordinating in-kind donations with donors, resettlement staff, and refugees (i.e. arranging donation pick-up and scheduling visits to refugee homes)
- Accompanying new refugee arrivals to public aid, clinic, and other appointments Coordinating monthly new arrival orientation workshops
- Assisting case managers with new arrival intake interviews
- Providing logistical support to R&P case managers as needed
- Minimum of 16 hours per week availability, minimum three-month commitment
Qualifications:
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Interest in working with refugees in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, and multi-ethnic environment.
- Patience and flexibility.
- Computer proficiency.
- Language proficiency in Amharic, Arabic, Burmese, French, Kirundi, Kinyarwanda, Polish, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Turkish, and Uzbek is preferred, but not required. Internship may be shortened or lengthened depending on student’s schedule.

Description
Refugee & Immigrant Community Services (RICS) partners with refugees, asylees, immigrants and survivors of trafficking to address their needs by connecting them to their new community, providing education and employment services, and the help they need to succeed in their new country. RICS annually resettles more than 150 individuals in Chicago from places like Afghanistan, Burma, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Sudan, Ukraine, and Syria. RICS serves an additional 500 refugees through a variety of services including cultural orientation, adjustment counseling, employment, job readiness and placement services, as well as medical case management, family literacy, and English language training for adults.
