VOLUNTEER TUTORS

Position Description

1. Volunteer Tutor matched to one student = Tutoring Team.

2. Team meets weekly for a 90-minute tutoring session, March - May.

3. Tutoring sessions are between 4:00 and 6:00 on Mondays & Wednesday.

4. Location - Fresh Youth Initiatives Building (505 W. 171 st between Audobon and Amsterdam).

5. Tutors receive training - general and specific to their student.

6. Professional staff at the site for guidance.

7. Tutor prepares and teaches lesson, and keeps notes.

8. Students from 5 th - 12 th grade needing help in literacy or math.

9. Matching - tutors choose area to teach, preferences re grade.

10. Materials at site, including games.

Fresh Youth Initiatives (FYI) mission is to support and encourage the efforts of young people in Washington Heights to design and carry out community service projects, develop leadership skills, fulfill their potential, and realize their dreams.

Description

Fresh Youth Initiatives (FYI) is a non-profit youth development organization in Washington Heights. FYI provides youth with the needed support, encouragement, experience, and life skills to show that young people, given the chance, can be strong and positive change agents in their community and in their own lives.

With few safe and nurturing options for the afterschool hours, FYI is a second home to more than 300 young people ages 10 -18 each year. Collectively, FYI youth provide more than 10,000 hours of service to the community each year. FYI complements its community service core with academic support, college preparation, meaningful first-time experiences, enrichment activities, and qualitative guidance from our staff.
