We're looking for tutors to help make southeastern Michigan a welcoming place to live. If you're looking to work with motivated individuals, who want to make the Detroit area their home, please consider becoming a tutor for the Siena Literacy Center.

The Siena Literacy Center is located in the Christ The King campus, in northwest Detroit (6 Mile/Telegraph). Tutors are trained and supported with staff and volunteers. We love our tutors and want them to succeed. Tutors must commit to a 13 hour training.

Tutors must make an eight month commitment to the program. Additionally, tutors will meet with their students once a week, for 3 hours (includes prep time and actual tutoring with student).

Mission Statement

Siena Literacy Center is a 501c3 non-profit organization that works to improve the lives of families in metropolitan Detroit by providing a basic adult education program and services with trained volunteers. We offer adult basic reading and math skills tutoring, basic computer skill classes, ESL (English as Second Language) tutoring, and study help with Citizenship interviews. Siena is also a certified provider of Northstar Digital Literacy. All of our services are FREE. Our learners are required to use the computer lab for a minimum of two hours weekly, two-hour weekly sessions with an assigned tutor, and one hour of homework/study time at home. Regular business hours are: Monday-Thursday from 10 am - 8 pm.

Since 1995, over 1,000 tutors have helped over 2,000 adult learners. Siena Literacy Center is looking for caring, patient, and flexible volunteer tutors.

  • Volunteer tutors are needed to teach reading, mathematics, and English as a Second Language.
  • Textbooks, Materials, training, and supplies are provided.

Learners in our programs are required to dedicate 5 hours weekly to their education, including 2 hours of tutoring time, 2 hours of the computer lab, and 1 hour of homework/study time.
