Su Casa
Originally a Franciscan Monastery, Su Casa now provides shelter, food, counseling and community to homeless latino families. We also work to serve the needs of our neighbors providing free community breakfasts 3 days a week, and lunch once a week.

Community members at Su Casa share daily life with each other and homeless Latino families. We have dinners together 5 nights a week, and we work to maintain a stable, supportive, and joyful environment for the families who live here. We also manage a soup kitchen two mornings a week and Sunday lunches.

Live-in community members/workers are vital to carrying out Su Casa's mission. There are full and part time posiitions available. Food, laundry, toiletries, and other basic needs are provided.

All workers participate in one or more of several teams that manage all of the programs and needs of Su Casa. Their responsibilities include hospitality, daily chores, administrative responsibilities, food pick up and distribution, preparing and serving food at the soup kitchen, house maintenance, case management, etc.

Full time community members receive a stipend of $100 per month plus access to health insurance. These volunteers work at least 40 to 50 hours per week plus participate in community activities.

three-fourths time community members work at least 30 hours a week and participate in community activities.

half- time community members pay $200 per month. They work at least 20 hours a week and participate in community activities.

Su Casa is located on the south side of Chicago near 51st and Ashland. For more information or to apply, please contact our Prospective Worker Coordinator at 773-376-9263 or via e-mail at liveinSucasa@gmail.com .

Mission Statement

Su Casa is a house of hospitality in the Catholic Worker tradition that provides a space of healing and hope to displaced Hispanic families and provides support to people in our community. Responding to the Gospel call to compassionate action, we are committed to a simple, non-violent lifestyle as we live and work among the poor.

Description

Su Casa is a transitional housing program for homeless Latino families located in Chicago's Back of the Yards community. Families can stay at Su Casa until they have the resources they need to move on to more permanent housing. Su Casa offers case management services, food, clothing, and transportation assistance, homework help and many recreational and educational activities.

We also manage Frieda's Place, where we offer a community center open to anyone in the neigborhood, with free breakfasts 2 times a week and a Sunday lunch. Guests also have access to free clothing and toiletries, and on Sundays receive groceries to take home for the week. Food is donated by Trader Joes and, during growing season, fresh, organic produce is distributed through Su Casa's garden that is managed by Growing Home.

There are 2 full time, low-salaried workers, a part time case manager, and 8 to 10 part and full-time live in volunteers who support the organization.

We are committed to working for social justice in our community and in the world, while living simply with one another.
