LEGAL WRITING INTERNSHIP
Within the Civil Rights Department, the Legal Writing Internship offers a talented, seasoned writer the opportunity to develop her/his technical and creative writing skills. Technical writing projects include drafting complaint letters and inquiries to offending parties, maintaining correspondence with incarcerated clients, and writing public records requests. Creative writing projects include the monthly Civil Rights Digest, additional case studies for the website, and working on the 2012 Civil Rights Report. The Legal Writing Intern will work closely with the Civil Rights Coordinator and Case Intake Counselor on additional projects as needed. Additional work may include research, note taking, and some database entry. The Legal Writing Intern will also have the opportunity to attend community events and trainings pertaining to broader civil rights work in Seattle.

HOW TO APPLY:
Please email the Volunteer Coordinator at cairwavolunteer@cair.com and, in the subject line, please clearly indicate the title(s) of the internship(s) in which you are interested, in order of preference. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Please include a cover letter, résumé, one writing sample of no more than one page in length (if applying for a graphic design or web-related position, in which case a portfolio of past work is required), a list of two references (one should be a professional reference, if possible), and any other information which we can use to assess fitness for the position. In the cover letter please explain your interest and describe relevant experience. Applicants must pass a background check. All internship positions at CAIR-WA are unpaid.
Time commitment for internships: A minimum six month, twelve hours per week commitment is required. Depending on the position, exceptions may be made for Summer internships (beginning in May or June), which, if the applicant desires, can instead require a 3.5 month, 20 hours per week minimum commitment. Most internships require all hours to be completed in the office, within the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.

C AIR-Washington the local Washington state chapter of CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) serving the neighboring Northwest. CAIR is the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group. CAIR-Washington is a not-for-profit organization registered in Washington. Though it leverages the resources, expertise, and knowledge base of CAIR (based in Washington D.C.), it functions as an independent organization that sets its own strategy and goals.
