Museum Greeter:
We are looking for friendly people to assist in welcoming visitors to the Museum and directing them to exhibitions, the Indigenous Garden, and the Museum Store. Museum Greeters also assist Museum staff, as needed, and must be able to stand for varying lengths of time while greeting visitors. Dress is business casual and volunteer hours are flexible.
Special Events:
Our special events focus on the heritage and culture of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and other Indigenous peoples. Each event offers a variety of volunteer opportunities that include: greeters who welcome guests; ushers to hand-out programs; "runners" who assist in live auctions at fundraisers; parking attendants; event reception table check-in assistants; and event setup and takedown assistants. Dress is business casual and volunteer hours are flexible.
Archives/Library:
Our non-circulating reference library is open to the public by appointment. Library volunteers must be self-motivated and able to work independently. Library volunteers must be able to lift heavy books and have computer skills. Assignments working in the Museum archives are determined in consultation with the Museum Archivist.
Oral History Project:
The Museum collects and studies historical information about individuals, families, important events, and everyday life using audiotapes, videotapes, or transcriptions of scheduled personal interviews. Volunteers must complete an orientation about conducting oral histories and have good hearing, listening, and computer skills. Interview equipment is provided by the Museum.
Conducting interviews may take place offsite, requiring transportation to meet with the person being interviewed. Oral history interviewers must be self-motivated, enjoy meeting with other people, and be able to work independently.
Education:
Throughout the season, the Museum offers educational classes, workshops, and demonstrations on Native skills and crafts for children and adults. Volunteers in educational programming assist Museum staff and instructors by carrying out a variety of support roles, as assigned. Hours are flexible and attire is normally informal, depending on the activity.
Office/Clerical:
Throughout the year, Museum staff has special needs of a clerical nature - filing, assembling or collating materials in preparation for special events and mailings, clipping and scanning articles about the Museum from newspapers and magazines, proofreading, and data entry.
Computer skills and a working knowledge of Excel are desirable to accomplish some tasks, but in no way are required to meet the many and varied needs of a clerical nature. A dedicated workstation with desktop computer is available.
