Work with kids to compete in the Tech Museum's Tech Challenge. The Tech Challenge reinforces 21st century skills, including creativity, problem-solving, design, risk-taking, learning from failure and perseverance. Volunteers will be paired with a group of students to coach and mentor. You will be responsible for helping them build their skills in engineering and enhancing their ability to ask questions while coming up with ways to find a solution. You will have the opportunity to join us in celebrating the Tech Challenge in a convention center hall filled with different teams of student inventors presenting their unique and innovative technology. This amazing opportunity will not only be extremely rewarding, but you will have the ability to gain work experience and networking opportunities.

About the Tech Challenge: The Tech Challenge is an annual team design challenge for students in grades 5-12 (6-8 at BGCP) that introduces and reinforces the scientific process with hands-on projects geared to solving real-world problem.

The Challenge: Build an earthquake-safe structure! In the past 40 years the population of California has almost doubled, and the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that by 2025 the state's population will increase by another 6 million people. Like many places, the Bay Area, with its geographical limitations and close proximity to major fault lines, presents a great challenge for urban planners who need to accommodate more people while making sure buildings can withstand large earthquakes. Where do we put all these people, and how do we keep them safe?

Length of Commitment:Twice a week from January- April 26, 2015 (Specific date to be announced)

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide the low-income youth of our community with the opportunities they need to achieve school success

Description

The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Peninsula's vision is that all young people, if they work hard, can live fulfilling lives with a good education, a fair paying job, decent housing, and the ability to raise a family. We want kids' futures to depend more upon their own actions and less upon the circumstances into which they were born.

It's an incredible time to live in Silicon Valley. Many are enjoying unprecedented levels of growth and wealth. People from all over the world are striving to move here to participate in our culture of optimism and opportunity. At the same time, this prosperity isn't being felt by all, and too many young people are growing up disconnected from what makes our community so dynamic.
