Do you have a passion for helping others? Be an ambassador to a newly arrived refugee family or individual. Refugee mentors can offer friendly encouragement and support as they adjust to their new home and environment. By helping a new resident explore their community, volunteers build up their confidence, build friendships, and provide emotional support while gaining insight to the refugee experience and learning about a new culture.

As a mentor, you help these refugees learn English, teach them about life in America and help them become familiar with the Omaha area. Assist them in meeting practical needs such as grocery shopping, going to the library, helping children with homework, and using the bus system. Contact with a refugee family or individual is set up between the mentor and client on a weekly basis. This position may include transportation if the volunteer feels comfortable and is authorized.

Interested volunteers will be invited to attend a Volunteer Information Session that is held on the first Thursday of each month from from 6-7 PM at our office on 42nd and Center.

Mentor Orientations are held on the 2nd Thursday of the month from 6-8 PM at our office on 42nd and Center. .

Requirements: Volunteers must pass a criminal background screen. They must also provide a copy of a valid driver's license and proof of auto insurance for a DMV check, if applicable.

This position is looking for volunteers available any day of the week, on a weekly basis and requires a 3-6 month commitment.
